The team is busy for much of the year. Students research year-round, stay up on current

events, and improve upon their speeches continually. We encourage you to familiarize

yourself with the Calendar provided.

venue and helpful hints for those days.

Parents serve as the judges of each speech and debate event for each tournament.

When Carlsbad doesn’t provide enough judges for a tournament, the Boosters are

required to pay a fee to hire each judge needed. We appreciate your commitment to

supporting your kids and the team by volunteering to judge on tournament days (plus

by judging, you will get some insight into what your student is actually talking about

and doing).

We are happy to help you become more comfortable and confident when you judge.

Please don’t hesitate to ask us for guidance, tips, suggestions. We even hope to host

a judge training. In the meantime, here are some resources for judging.

during the 2022-2023 year

Each Fall the CHS Speech & Debate Boosters hold an Annual

Donation Drive, and we request a certain amount per student to

help fund the CHS Speech & Debate program. The Annual

Donation Drive is generally our biggest money raising event and

can even include corporate matching donations. This money has

been used to pay for per student and team tournament registration,

stipends for assistant coaches, coach travel, registration of students

with the National Speech & Debate organization, and to fund some

supplies, to name just a few.

Oftentimes, we also hold a Spring Fundraiser to raise money specifically

to assist students attend prestigious travel tournaments, including

CHSSA California State Speech & Debate Tournament and the National Speech & Debate Tournament.
